OVERVIEW
Origin of the Breed
The Silken Windsprite originated in the United States and was initially referred to as the “Longhaired Whippet.”
Its development was based on Whippet lines, complemented by the targeted use of the Shetland Sheepdog. The aim was to establish a sighthound with a light, silky coat without compromising the functional characteristics of a sighthound.
Breeding Development
From the early stages of development, emphasis was placed on maintaining a clearly defined sighthound type.
The introduction of other breeds served exclusively for the initial establishment of the coat. Subsequent breeding focused on stabilizing the type.
The focus was on:
-
functional anatomy
-
efficient movement
-
and a stable temperament
International Distribution
Over time, the Silken Windsprite spread beyond the United States to Europe and other regions.
Today, the breed is bred in several countries and organized within various national structures.
International development occurs independently across countries, yet with comparable breeding objectives.
Current Status
The Silken Windsprite is currently recognized at a national level in some countries or organized within corresponding breeding structures.
A unified international standard does not yet exist.
Current efforts focus on:
-
the harmonization of existing standards
-
and the establishment of a unified foundation for the continued development of the breed
